Sam flips, drops or keeps signs by gut feel — subtracting a negative as if it were a positive, and giving negatives to products that should be positive.
Quick lesson
- Subtracting a number means adding its opposite: a − (−b) = a + b.
- Multiplying or dividing two numbers with the same sign gives a positive; different signs give a negative.
- An odd number of negative factors gives a negative product; an even number gives a positive one.
