The Paragraph Focus Cache
One governing point, developed and connected.
Core technique
A focused paragraph is governed by one point that supports your larger claim. The governing point is often stated in a topic sentence, though it may emerge across the first sentences. Everything else in the paragraph serves it: evidence that grounds the point, explanation that shows how the evidence proves it, and a link that tells the reader why it matters for your thesis. There is no required number of sentences; a paragraph is long enough when the point is developed and short enough when nothing in it serves another point. When a paragraph drifts, it usually means a second point has arrived — that point may deserve its own paragraph. Check focus by asking of each sentence: does this help prove this paragraph's point?
